Medical Communication Competence

Handbook on Theory, Didactics, Practice
and Evaluation of Medical Interviewing

ISBN 978-3-936656-94-7 (Mai 2025)

This handbook is intended to contribute to the promotion of communicative competence in medicine and other health professions. The handbook is the result of an interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers from the fields of medicine, psychotherapy, psychology and linguistics. The 43 chapters are divided into 6 parts: 1. Problems, Goals and Methods, 2. Theoretical Foundation, 3. Didactics and Methods, 4. Manual and Practice, 5. Specific Fields of Competence, 6. Evaluation.

The handbook is characterized by a wide range of good and poor examples taken from recorded conversations in real consultations and ward rounds. The empirical conversation analyses, which are theory-led, problem-oriented and manual-based, are intended to serve as a guide for improving one's own conversation practice, which can be evaluated using a specific rating tool.

Due to its differentiated learning opportunities, the handbook can be used in medical training and continuing education. It is suitable for lectures as well as for group learning and self-study. The handbook is designed as a “Living Handbook” with most chapters published and more to come soon.

Christian Albus, MD, is Professor and Head of the Department for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy at the University of Cologne.
